Class 1 - A snapshot of school life for FS2 and Year 1
Mrs Drury is the dedicated class teacher for Class One, alongside Mrs Cotton, the nursery nurse. Additionally, we have the support of Miss Holden and Mrs Bradley, who serve as teaching assistants. Our Physical Education (PE) day is observed every Thursday, and we provide new homework to our children on this day as well.
In Class 1, we provide comprehensive daily phonics lessons tailored to meet your child's individual understanding and knowledge. Our phonics programme is designed to enhance their reading abilities and language development.
Following the phonics session, your child will engage in a literacy lesson that encompasses a range of tasks related to topic work, history, geography or science. These activities aim to further enhance their broader knowledge and understanding of these subjects.
In Class 1, reading is the cornerstone of our curriculum. Our dedicated staff make it a priority to read to the children multiple times throughout the day, ensuring their exposure to a rich variety of literature. To foster engagement and involvement, we have implemented a system where the children actively participate in selecting the book to be read at the end of each day.
Our spring topic centres around the exploration of our home, local area, and country. Throughout this unit, we will delve into the values that underpin British society, analyse our own culture, and gain an understanding of various cultures across the globe. Additionally, we will undertake comparative studies between our local area and other cities and countries worldwide.
Homework is assigned to students every Thursday to reinforce their learning and development. The specific homework assigned to your child depends on their phonics group. We strongly encourage parents to actively participate in their child's homework routine and devote time daily to reading and practicing together. This collaborative effort enables a more effective learning experience and contributes to your child's academic progress.
In the current term, our designated PE day is Thursday. Each Thursday, the highly engaging PE lessons are conducted by Mrs. Sharp. These sessions are designed to aid children in their physical development by enhancing their gross motor skills, teaching them body control, and providing knowledge about the human body.
We offer daily math lessons for your children, with F2 and Year 1 students being divided into separate classes for optimized teaching. These lessons adhere to the esteemed White Rose Maths scheme, which aims to foster a genuine passion for mathematics and cultivate a strong comprehension among the young learners.
In Class 1, we embrace the wonders of the great outdoors. Our goal is to ensure that the rich learning experience our students enjoy within the classroom is reflected in the outdoor environment as well. We provide our children with a wide range of resources and facilities to explore and learn from when they step outside, including reading areas, writing spaces, maths stations, as well as bicycles, scooters, sports equipment, and play apparatus.
