Charity

So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:13

As Catholics we are taught about charity work through the gospels.  Most people think of charity simply as a benevolent act of giving. The most general definition of charity, however, means so much more than that. Charity in its purest sense means love and encompasses our love for God and our love for our fellow people. Thomas Aquinas said, “the habit of charity extends not only to the love of god but also the love of our neighbour.” These two kinds of love are closely tied to one another.

As members of the Catholic Faith we are encouraged to practice charity in different ways. Since the apostolic age, Christians were taught to not just give but to give from the heart to everyone in need regardless of their race or religion because “Christ is all and in all.”

At St. Gerard's we work hard to encompass these teachings through our own acts of charity work, through physical challenges, giving our time and also prayer, we encourage children and families alike to always think of others and how they can help both their local and wider community.

PACT offers emotional, social, and practical support to families in South Yorkshire who have children and young individuals battling cancer, aiming to enhance their quality of life.

This November members of our school and wider community have come together to run or walk between 5km and 10km everyday.  As a community we have seen first hand the amazing work this charity does supporting our own Mrs Jenkinson as her son Owen fights his own personal battle against cancer.

Movember

We’re taking them all on Mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer – we’re taking them all on.

Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

For the 7th year running Mr Wallace is again taking part in the Movember challenge.

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse. It is a hands-on way for you to bless children in need across the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, personal care items, school supplies, and fun gifts.

Every October, we welcome Liz Ventura into school to teach the children all about the amazing work the Samaritans do for children throughout the world.  Every child is then welcomed to donate £5 to pack a shoe box and enclose a prayer they have written.

St. Gerard's Santa Dash

This December we are putting on our running shoes and Santa hats all in aid of our Sensory Room fundraising, organised by our wonderful Friends of St Gerard's Family.

We believe that having a sensory space at our school will greatly benefit not only the students who require additional support but our entire school community. It will be a resource to support the diverse needs of all our students and promote inclusivity in our school environment.

St Gerard's Mini Vinnies

St. Gerard's Mini Vinnies are committed to helping our school community in whatever way they can. They are children from across Key Stage 2 who are passionate and enthusiastic individuals, bursting with ideas and are keen to get started on their mission to helps others.

We are connected to our parish's St. Vincent de Paul Group, who have bought the children their starter pack and are looking forward to working with the children during the year to help them raise awareness of social justice.

During Advent we encourage others to give by asking for donations for our Reverse Advent Calendar.
